Waccamaw Floor Covering has been a cornerstone of the Conway, South Carolina community since 1986, built on a foundation of industry expertise, hard work, and a deep commitment to customer satisfaction.
The story begins with founder Charles Squires, who spent the early 1980s as an outside sales representative for Pelican Building Supply, a regional chain with eleven stores, where he represented their cabinets and flooring department. When Pelican closed their flooring department in 1985, Charles transitioned into the role of Installation Manager, overseeing operations across five stores in Horry and Georgetown counties. It was through these years of hands-on experience that Charles recognized a significant need for a dedicated floor covering store in the Conway area.
In 1986, Charles took that vision and turned it into reality, opening Waccamaw Floor Covering in a rented space within a building occupied by Waccamaw Furniture. When the owner of that business purchased Norman’s Ace Hardware, he valued Charles’ partnership enough to construct a dedicated addition to the hardware store for Waccamaw Floor Covering to call home. By 1990, Charles had outgrown that space as well, and became one of the first tenants in a newly built facility at 1717 4th Avenue in Conway — the address the business still proudly calls home today.
Starting with 5,000 square feet of showroom and warehouse space, Waccamaw Floor Covering grew steadily alongside the rapidly expanding local construction market of the 1990s. By the time of Charles’ retirement in 2021, the business had expanded multiple times, ultimately occupying 10,500 square feet at their 4th Avenue location.

The next chapter of Waccamaw Floor Covering belongs to Bryan Squires, Charles’ son, who was quite literally raised in the business. Born in 1984, Bryan was sweeping job sites and helping around the store as a young child. In his teenage years, he spent summers and holidays working alongside flooring installers, learning the craft from the ground up. When Bryan expressed his desire to join the business full time after high school, Charles insisted he earn a degree first. Bryan enrolled at Horry Georgetown Technical College — where his father assumed he was earning transfer credits toward a four-year university. Charles got quite a surprise in 2004 when Bryan walked into his office, placed an Associate of Business degree on his desk, and said, “You never said what kind of degree. Where’s my office?”
However, Charles was not quite ready to hand over the reins. It would be eight more years before he felt confident that Bryan was truly prepared to assume a full time management role. Bryan used that time wisely, learning every facet of the business under his father’s guidance. In 2012, Bryan officially stepped into full time management, and in 2021, he purchased the business upon Charles’ retirement.
Under Bryan’s leadership, Waccamaw Floor Covering has continued to grow and thrive, weathering economic challenges and an ever-changing business landscape with resilience and determination. Today, the business operates on a footprint of 14,000 square feet, a testament to nearly four decades of trusted service and an unwavering commitment to exceeding customer expectations.
